The Citroen Ami Super, described (by me) as France's Mini Cooper, was a muscle car in all but cc, taking a bigger engine and shoehorning it into an unlikely.

In addition to the Service light commercial, the Ami 8 was used as the basis for the M35 Wankel rotary-engined prototype in two door coupé form and as the GS -powered Ami Super. In 1979, the Ami 8 was superceded by the Visa which had been launched the year before. Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1969, the Ami 8 was a face-lifted Ami.

The Super was recognisable from the 8 via its extra front air intakes, while a top speed of 88mph made it 12mph faster than its stablemate.

De Citroën Ami was presented as Ami 6 in '61 as a model to fill the gap between the 2CV and the DS. In 1969 the revised version was presented: the Citroën Ami 8. As Super, the Ami was available with a four-cylinder from the GS, but our photo model simply has the familiar 32 hp two-cylinder with Duck Roots under the hood.

By comparison with the AMI 8, the AMI Super therefore has a rise in power of 21.5 h.p. DIN, and an increase in torque of 19.5 lb.ft DIN. Faster, it will do (and in fact exceed) 87 m.p.h. (on half load). Livelier also, it reaches 100 kilometers per hour in 18 seconds, covers 400 meters from a standing start in 20.4 seconds, and 1000 meters in 38.

Citroën. CITROEN AMI SUPER. 4-door 4-seater fastback saloon/estate. Citroën's idea of a Mini-Cooper style hot-rod, combining Ami 8's chassis and structure with flat-four engine from latest GS. Top speed of 88mph was much better than ordinary 8's 72mph, but still not in the sports saloon class.
Based on the Ami 8, the Ami Super was probably the ultimate Q car - the recipe is very simple:- take one of the slowest cars on the road - albeit a car with exemplary handling and roadholding, rip out its two cylinder 602cm 3 engine and replace it with an engine with double the number of cylinders and nearly double the amount of power. The engine was the air cooled, horizontally opposed flat.
